AEDIFICATIO IN CARITATE: (Ephesians 4:16) “To build in love.”

This was chosen as my motto to emphasize my conviction that the common vocation of all baptized believers is to build up the Body of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit bestowed on all the members of the Church by Jesus, Risen Lord.

I was much edified at Vatican II to see Ephesians 4:16 frequently cited.

COAT OF ARMS: It carries several emblems:

The Diocese of Victoria coat of arms: The crown surmounting the cross of Saint Andrew indicates the site of Victoria and the Patron of the Cathedral and of the Diocese. A wavy line of water surrounds the Island of Vancouver, as it was known when the Diocese was established in 1846.

My personal coat of arms carries a chevron and a falcon, part of the early coat of arms of the De Roo family, originating in the Flanders, Belgium. The chevron and tower emblems were also carried on the De Pape shield, the maternal side of my family.
A single tower adorned the coat of arms of Pope John XXIII, who appointed me as Bishop of Victoria. The original field of blue was changed to red to recall the blood which true believers are prepared to shed, if need be, as a witness to love.
